It all started with a red line …
Applicants for planning permission are required to mark the boundaries of a planning application in red. Therefore, red lines have a significance in the provision of town planning services.
But Tom Phillips + Associates (TPA) provide much more than red lines and more than planning services. Our sister company, Redline Studios was established in 2016, specialising in architectural visualisations. The studio provides high-quality 3D solutions to help illustrate projects, whether that be to help communicate the sometimes complex information contained in a planning document, to act as an architectural visualisation or simply to promote a product.
Graham Isherwood, Senior Graphic Designer, heads up the Design Studio 15 years’ experience in the 3D and CGI industry. Graham’s most recent accolade was for his role as lead 3D Animator for the Award winning short fantasy film, The Clockmaker’s Dream. The film won Best Animation FX Award at the Boston Sci-film Festival in February 2016.

Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI)
Architectural Visualisation is the process of creating photorealistic computer-generated images and animations from two-dimensional architectural and engineering drawings and plans.
3D architectural visualisation brings new schemes to life long before they have been built.

3D Printing is the rapid creation of physical scale models from digital 3D models.
It is a two-step process involving: firstly, the 3D modelling; and secondly, the 3D Printing.
Redline Studios believe that CGI and 3D printing technologies and techniques are only going to get better and better. With this in mind, Redline Studios and Hacketts 3D are working together to bring to Clients an affordable and high quality 3D solution providing 3D modelling and 3D Printing Services.
Together they have developed a Total-3D-Solution to bring affordable and faster products than traditional modelling methods.
Their solution involves the creation of one digital model that can be used in multiple applications from the traditional photomontages, shadow studies and animations to computer generated walk-thru.
Send that same model to a 3D printer and yet more options open up. Architectural development, scheme layout visualisation and space optimization, through to sales and advertising.
3D printing is a very new technology with hugely diverse applications and opportunities.
Case Study: VW Beetle
In the search to find a suitable “asset” to model and 3D print, Redline Studios chose the iconic VW Beetle as it is instantly recognisable by most people.
The process starts with reference material – and plenty of it. A Google and Pinterest search provided us with numerous reference images for all parts of the car – as well as the blueprints from which to model.
The aim was to model the car as accurately as possible, down to the nuts and bolts, in order to produce a photo-realistic render and be able to hand it over for printing.
Once the asset was built and textured, regular communication with the printing company took place in order to have a smooth transition from a digital file to the best 3D printing file.
Redline Studios can prepare a full range of verified photomontages.
